Wine Walk Wednesday on Hyde Park Square August 8!

The second Wednesday of the summer/fall months, the merchants on Hyde Park Square invite you to shop and sip for a good cause! 100 % of the proceeds go to The Cure Starts Now and Living with Breast Cancer/The Karen Wellington Foundation. Purchase arm bands for $10 at a welcome table in front of the Miller Gallery (2715 Erie Ave.). Participating stores will have balloons in front of their stores and will serve wine while you shop! Get your friends together and support a good cause, sip wine and have fun shopping, what fun! The Spicy Olive looks forward to seeing you!

The Spicy Olive’s Blackberry Ginger Chicken Wings

Ingredients
4 pounds chicken “party” wings
2 tablespoons The Spicy Olive’s Garlic Olive Oil (or olive oil of your choice)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
3/4 cup The Spicy Olive’s  Blackberry Ginger Balsamic Vinegar
1/4 cup soy sauce

Directions
Combine soy sauce, balsamic, pepper, olive oil and wings in a large, zip-top bag. Close bag and refrigerate 4 hours to overnight.

Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat.

Remove the chicken wings from the marinade and pat dry. Cook the wings on the preheated grill, turning occasionally, until the chicken is well browned and no longer pink, 25 to 30 minutes.

 

Place the reserved marinade in a small sauce pot set over medium-low heat, and gently simmer until reduced by half, approximately 5 minutes.

Place grilled wings in a large bowl. Drizzle with reduced balsamic marinade and toss to coat well.

The Wine Cellar has some great summer wines to taste this weekend!

Montinore Estate, Muller-Thurgau, Oregon: This 2014 vintage is made from the Muller Thurgau grape which is a lesser known variety of Riesling. This playful wine is a dry/semi sweet “Riesling”  with great mineral and lots of peach, apple, pineapple fruit on the nose. A wonderful wine to enjoy on a summer day!

Gerard Bertrand Perles de Sauvignon Blanc, France: This Sauvignon Blanc is characterized by its attractive citrus and a touch of menthol. The aging in oak barrels gives the wine structure and length on the mouth. This wine is in an exquisite bottle, with a blue glass stopper that evokes the Mediterranean coast and a glass pearl necklace to adorn this delicious wine.

Gran Vega Privado, Granacha (Campo de Borja) Spain:  A generous, easy drinking Garnacha! Fresh berry fruit without sweetness makes this a great, easy to drink summer red.

Freelander Cabernet Sauvignon, 2016 California: Aged in American French oak, this red wine shows lush mouth feel and balance and complexity. Rich in blackberry and cassis flavors, with ripe sweet tannins and a gentle finish. This gentle finish makes it a nice Cab for summer steak dinners.

The first day of summer is here! Let’s celebrate with some delicious wines to taste at The Spicy Olive!

Our selections for the last two weeks of June are:

From New Zealand:

Craggy Range Sauvignon Blanc

Craggy Range Pinot Noir

From Austria:

Pannonica White (Gruner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay

Pannonica Red (Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch and Pinot Noir)

Wine tastings from 4-7pm on Thursday and Friday and 3-6pm on Saturday. $1-3 per taste.

Stop in to try these lovely wines! Also next Thursday instead of a regular wine tasting we are having our Wine Experience! $35 per person for great summer food paired with great wines for hot weather entertaining!

Wine Experiences at The Spicy Olive !

Starting in June,  the 4th Thursday of each month , The Spicy Olive will host a wine experience with food pairings! Each Experience will have a theme:

June 28th: Perfect Wines for Porch Sipping and Summer Entertaining

July 27th: Wines for Summer BBQ’s

August 24th: Italian Wines and Food Pairings

September 28th: Great Wines for Tailgating and Fall

October 25th: Ghostly Gulps- Good wines & treats for Halloween

November 15th: Holiday Wines and Entertaining

The Wine Experiences are $35 per person and include 4 wines to taste, 3 food courses and recipes so you can prepare the food at home for your own celebrations!

The Spicy Olive’s Blueberry Smoothie

The olive oils at The Spicy Olive are full of healthy biophenols that aid your health in a myriad of ways! One of those biophenols is oleocanthal. Oleocanthal is a potent anti inflammatory agent! Two tablespoons of our wonderful healthy olive oil is so good for you and here is a great recipe to make it tasty and easy!

Ingredients Method

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups blueberries frozen
  • 1/3 cup The Spicy Olive's Strawberry balsamic vinegar
  • 1 fresh banana sliced
  • 1 cup baby kale
  • 1/4 cup The Spicy Olive's Hojiblanca fresh Ultra Premium olive oil
  • 2 Tablespoons chia seeds

Method
 

  1. Soak the chia seeds in 1/3 cup Strawberry balsamic vinegar for 20 minutes prior to making this recipe.
  2. Add the soaked chia seeds, olive oil, banana slices to the blender jar and blend to a smooth consistency. Add the baby kale and frozen blueberries to the blender jar and process until completely smooth.
  3. Makes 2 generous portions or 4 smaller servings.

The Spicy Olive’s French Toast

This is a classic French Toast recipe, the difference is that you cook it in olive oil! Try our Butter Infused olive oil for a rich and buttery French Toast or our Blood Orange olive oil for a delicious citrus twist!

Ingredients Method

Ingredients
  

  • 2-3 The Spicy Olive's olive oil Butter or Blood Orange
  • 4 eggs beaten
  • 2/3 cup milk or half & half or use 1/3 cup of each
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 slices thick bread

Method
 

  1. Place beaten eggs in a shallow dish. Add milk or half and half. Whisk together and add the vanilla and cinnamon. Place griddle pan or frying pan over medium high heat. Add Butter or Blood Orange olive oil and heat. Dip slices of bread in egg mixture and place on heated pan. Cook until lightly browned and flip to cook other side. Remove and sprinkle with powered sugar before serving. Serve with maple syrup and/or fresh strawberries. Enjoy!
